Robots are machines which can be programmed to do repetitive and complex tasks which would otherwise be tedious or even dangerous for humans to perform. Most robots are not human like at all but functional and not esthetically pleasing looking factory machinery.
Humanoid robots are called androids and these have a long history. Many ancient cultures have described such artificial people in their writings. People in the past also built automatons, some of which were human like.
